What does a hydraulic pump breather plug do?
A sealed reservoir would create vacuum on every cylinder extension and pressure on every retraction — eventually pulling air past the seals or pushing oil out somewhere it shouldn't be. The breather lets the reservoir equalize with the atmosphere as oil level rises and falls, and the bronze insert keeps mud, splash, and grit from making it inside.
