Winch Capacity Calculator

Calculate the pulling power you need and find the right Pierce winch for the job.

Quick Rule: Multiply your vehicle's GVWR by 1.5× to find the minimum winch capacity. Use GVWR (found on the door sticker), not curb weight.

Pro Tips
Winch capacity decreases 10–20% per additional rope layer on the drum. Calculate based on the outer layer.
Snatch blocks multiply pulling force but halve line speed — great for stuck vehicles.
For righting a rolled vehicle, calculate uprighting force separately before adding pull resistance.
Never exceed a winch's rated capacity. When in doubt, size up.

Calculations are estimates for general guidance only. Always consult manufacturer specifications for your application.
