What does a cable tensioner actually do?
It applies constant pressure to the wire rope wound on the drum, so the rope stays seated in tight, even wraps. Without it, slack can develop during free-spool or partial unwinds — and slack rope on a wound drum can collapse into the layers below it (bird-nesting), causing rope damage and failed pulls. The spring-loaded arm rides against the drum and holds the rope in position.
