The 2016 Pierce”Pulling For You” essay scholarship winner, Kynzi Creighton, is in her first semester at New Mexico State University. We caught up with her in between classes. Kynzi shares her experience and how things are going.
Q. You’re going to an agricultural school, how is that going?
School is awesome. I love New Mexico State and the people. I feel like I am in school with my family. My classes are going really well.
Q. How did you find out about the “Pulling For You” FFA essay scholarship?
I heard about it through my mom. She was talking to a lot of people about scholarships that would fit me. I am a believer that not every scholarship opportunity is a good fit. So she passed the link on to me via email. She said I think this one might be good for you so take a look.
Q. Why did you choose to enter the Pierce “Pulling For You” scholarship?
A few days later I read about it and it seemed like a really good fit for me. I read about Mark (read about 2016 winner Mark Gutierrez here) from last year and started thinking about what I wanted to write about. I thought a lot about how to make it unique for me and what “pulling for you” meant. I really am pulling for my generation. I sent my mom and my AG teacher my essay. They both told me they thought it was really good.
Q. Did you think you were going to win?
I greatly enjoyed the topic and what I wrote about. I was just hoping that it was a good enough essay but I felt really confident because of how passionate I was about what I wrote. I also felt really confident because I knew how long I had really thought about what pulling for you means and I felt like my essay represented that.
Q. What is your favorite part your FFA experience?
I am currently serving as FFA New Mexico State president. I am spending this year traveling and helping other students see how the FFA can help them achieve their goals and dreams. I have been doing trainings and just got back from the New Mexico state fair. I had the opportunity to advocate for agriculture during the event.
The red barn is in the middle of the fairgrounds. There are a lot of animals and interactive areas. It’s an excellent chance for a lot of people can to come through and be exposed to all kinds of agricultural activities. We have lots of baby animals, and let the public play with the animals. The kids really love it. We talk to them about the different uses of each animal. We are about to go to National Convention in Indianapolis and I am very excited. I was elected in June and I will be state president until next June.
Q. What is your advice to students considering entering the 2017 essay scholarship contest?
My best advice is to really think about the topic. Think about why you want or need the FFA scholarship. Make sure it’s something that you are passionate about and you really believe in. I know that you will be more successful when you are expressing something you truly care about. The topic is really important and when you really think about what pulling for you means its pretty awesome.
Scholarships can be really overwhelming. Try not to let yourself get overwhelmed. Find scholarships that fit you and your personality and what you have going on in your life. If they are in line with what you care about and who you are it shines through.
Thank you Kynzi for catching up with us. We are honored to be a part of your education and look forward to hearing of your successes in the future!
