Hauling Hay: Choosing a Hay Spear or Bale Spike

by The PIERCE Team on 6/16/15 1:57 PM

Pierce Bale SpikeFeed your herd quickly in the comfort of your truck with a PIERCE Bale Spike, also known as a hay spear.

We know you want to make the most of every dollar. We created a cost effective way to haul hay.  The PIERCE bale spike is made for small to medium-sized ranches to feed cattle one bale at a time. You don’t have to buy an expensive bale bed to do the job, the PIERCE hydraulic bale spike works the same way, hauling hay without the cost.

For decades, we’ve engineered and manufactured our spikes in our shop in Henrietta, Texas. We offer replacement parts in case the spike isn’t used for several seasons and you need a new pump, solenoid or wiring.

Pierce offers two bale spike models.  Both hay bale movers deliver the same hay hauling capacity, functionality, and share similar parts. When choosing between the ABS1K and the ABS2K the primary difference is your ability to haul a trailer without removing your bale spike.

The Original PIERCE Hydraulic bale Spear Bale Spike – ABS1KPierce Bale Spike
  • The ABS1K attaches to a standard 2 5/16" gooseneck ball.
  • The bale spike is light enough to be team lifted out of the bed. We recommend using our PIERCE Chain hoist for single person installation and removal.
  • Haul up to 2,500 lbs of hay.
  • Comes with a welded 3" cylinder with a 16" stroke, 56' of #4 hookup cables, quick disconnects, two way Bucher pump, pre-wired Pierce two function remote and a 150 amp breaker.
  • One year warranty included.

*You must remove the bale spike to haul your gooseneck trailer.

The PIERCE Bolt-In Hay Spear Bale Spike – ABS2KPierce Bale Spike
  • The ABS2K bolts to the OEM bed or at bed truck, allowing the gooseneck to be unused.
  • In addition, the ABS2K is manufactured to bolted-in to the front crossmember above the gooseneck box only. The rest of the unit is able to be removed like the ABS1K. When the front section is removed the back section of the bale spike stays put.
  • Remove the bale spears to use your trailer.
  • Haul up to 2,500 lbs of hay.
  • Comes with 3" cylinder with a 16" stroke, 56' of number four hookup cables, quick disconnects, two way Bucher pump, pre-wired Pierce two function remote and a 150 amp breaker.
  • One year warranty included.

*You can haul your gooseneck trailer without removing the unit.
